About Alton Train Station

Alton station (1852) was terminus for the Mid Hants Railway to Winchester.

The "Watercress Line" earned its nickname from transporting the local crop to London.

Though mainline services were cut in 1973, the heritage railway preserved the section to Alresford.

The station retains original buildings and signal box, now housing a railway museum.

Modern SWR services run to London via the surviving mainline connection.

This dual heritage/mainline operation makes Alton unique, attracting both commuters and tourists.

Annual steam galas and "Polar Express" events boost local tourism while maintaining Altons railway legacy dating back to Victorian engineering.
